What is a Rotator Cuff tear?

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

The rotator cuff muscles and tendons control the pivoting of the shoulder joint. They usually tear by having a hole worn in them from chronic impingement, as well as trauma. This is more common after age 40. Patients usually have increased pain with overhead activities, as well as limitation of motion and weakness. This is usually confirmed by MRI scan or a special x-ray called an arthrogram.
